Finally, a sunny Weekend! As there was still too much snow in the mountains my friend and I decided for a season opening hike along the Rhine. We started early at the Rheinfall and found the gates to the Rheinfall open, so we enjoyed a free look over the massive amount of water that goes through there every minute. After that we set out along the banks of the Rhine, crossing the river at the first bridge. From there we just followed the river up to Rheinau (crossing into Germany in between). Luckily we almost met no people and were therefore able to enjoy the silence and the tweeting of the birds.
In Rheinau we decided to do an extra loop into Jestetten. The town is nothing special and only famous for Swiss shoppers to go there and do their groceries. As we were quite thirsty, we only went there to enjoy a beer. :) After that 6 km detour we rejoined our hike at Rheinau and kept on following the banks of the Rhine. The weather was gorgeous and the going was easy. After recrossing the border into Switzerland there was a really beautiful stretch. We had a lookout for beavers but couldn't see any unfortunately. But there were a lot of trees that were bitten off by beavers.
After a while we arrived in the town of Rüdlingen and crossed the river again to the other side. Once more we just followed the banks and enjoyed the fresh air and the quietness of the nature. Even though you're never far from civilization on this hike most parts are pretty quiet. But I guess that will change in summer when there probably will be more people swimming and BBQing along the Rhine. As we already walked quite far we decided to stop at the Restaurant Tössegg and enjoyed the last sunrays and another well deserved beer. :) From there it was not far to the railway station of Eglisau where we ended our first hike of the season.
